Responsible Slope Grooming

Across our ski areas in Alpe d’Huez, Les 2 Alpes, La Grave and Alpe du Grand Serre, slope grooming plays an esential role in ensuring piste quality and skier safety. It it is also an area of our activity that we are continuously working on to limit our environmental impact.

Through innovative technologies and responsible practices, we are reducing emissions, optimising resource use and protecting natural environments. These efforts are fully aligned with SATA Group – AEON’s broader strategy to decarbonise our operations and preserve mountain ecosystems.

Our objective is clear:
to deliver efficient and sustainable slope grooming, combining safety, piste quality and respect for the environment.

Going Further for the Environment

All our grooming machines run on HVO100, a biofuel produced from used vegetable oils. This choice enables a reduction of up to 90% in CO₂ emissions and 65% in fine particulate matter.

All our snow groomers are equipped with a Snowsat navigation system, which includes:

- A navigation GPS that allows drivers to geolocate themselves and visualise the terrain, piste boundaries, buildings, and lifts.

- A centimetric GPS that measures the snow thickness beneath the tracks.

It is a true decision-making tool, helping to distribute snow evenly across the pistes and determine when snow production is necessary.

All our drivers receive training in driving, eco-driving, snow science, mechanics, and safety. Eco-driving not only reduces fuel consumption (with 97% of grooming time spent in green-zone eco-mode) but also optimises every grooming pass with greater precision.

The benefits: lower fuel use, reduced CO₂ emissions, and optimised grooming operations.

In spring of 2025, an electric snow groomer was tested in the high-altitude ski area in Les 2 Alpes, and in 2026, it will be trialled on the pistes overlooking the Oz-on-Oisans resort. The outcomes of this experiment will allow us to evaluate plans to gradually equip part of our grooming fleet—particularly for snow fronts and Nordic pistes—with electric-powered machines in the coming years.

Our piste grooming strategy combines safety, quality, and environmental responsibility. Thanks to innovative technologies, sustainable fuels, and responsible practices on the ground, we limit our ecological impact while keeping our ski areas perfectly maintained. Experiments such as electric grooming machines will allos us to prepare for the future and continue to reduce our carbon footprint
